Forcing bulbs

The hundreds of bulbs that we planted outside will take a long time to flower…but we want flowers soon!! Luckily for us, mother nature gives us some opportunities to change the course of things a little bit without making a catastrophic disaster happen. So what are we doing? We are forcing bulbs to grow inside. I saw the idea online and we are giving it a shot to see if we can grow flowers during the winter time.

We had a bunch of jars around the house (I have a hard time throwing them away – surely they’ll be useful someday) so we are using them as flower vases. We bought some daffodil and hyacinth bulbs – they were on sale because the season of planting bulbs is about to end – and also some river rocks pebbles. So here is what we did…we washed the pebbles and filled up all the jars. Then we filled the jars up with water just to the edge of the top layer of rocks, and then we placed the bulbs on top of the rocks. The idea is to have the bulbs barely touch the water – you don’t want them under the water because they could rot. So now we just need to wait and see if they will decide to grow! Hopefully they will so we can enjoy a little bit of spring during winter :) Mother nature spoils us!
